Tuesday has come, my friends, thankfully giving us some respite, hopefully, from Monday's relentless onslaught. And with the dawning of this fine day, comes with it your next episode of Texas Tidbits. This one looks in not only one window to the past, that of the band, but also a little sneak peek of mine.
It’s a band I’ve listened to a thousand times. Especially when it comes to their song “High School Never Ends.” A song that has aged well throughout the years (I've linked it down below in case you're interested). Along with the song “1985,” they have definitely earned their place in musical history, at least as far as I'm concerned.
Now, what does this have to do with Texas? Simple. That place they earned in musical history had a beginning, as they always do. And that beginning heralds not only from a town in north Texas called Wichita Falls, where they officially formed in 1994, but from a town to which I have spent a good amount of time over the years, Denton.
Nicknamed “Little D” after its correlation to Dallas, it's a town that has grown exponentially in the last twenty years, attracting big names in music like Brave Combo and Bowling for Soup, with Brave Combo still calling it home. A hotbed of music and art in general, still in many ways rocking a hippy vibe. Yet, despite its massive growth, it has managed to keep some of its small town appeal. The Arts and Jazz festival it hosts every year is an amazing event, drawing in artists from all over the world. I can attest to the food booth of “Fried What?” being some of the best and most interesting food I've ever tried.
While some of the politics have soured it in the last few years for me, it will always hold a special place in my heart just for the sheer amount of memories I have there. From the homemade ice cream at Beth Marie's Ice Cream Parlor that would give Blue Bell a run for its money, the Downtown Mini Mall, an eclectic collector's paradise, and the giant purple book store aptly named Recycled Books, a wonderland of one-of-a-kinds and treasures in which to lose yourself in.
And to see a band like Bowling For Soup call Texas home for many years, including Little D, it warms my heart. Just another reason I love this great state of mine.

"Girl All the Bad Guys Want" is my personal favorite Bowling for Soup song.
