Word of the Day #157-163
Seven words for seven days (Now coming to you as a daily note and a weekly compilation)
Another Monday, another seven words for your amusement. To view previous installments, head on over to my main page to catch more of these and other essays.
Word of the Day #157: purpose
It’s what drives us. We all strive for a purpose in life. Some to their detriment. What many don’t realize is, oftentimes it’s oneself who creates their own purpose. It can be found in so many places and take on so many names. Purpose is drive, ambition, determination all rolled into one. But, sometimes, it takes perspective to realize yours. It’s not always as grand as you may think, nor does it have to answer to any particular beck and call. Purpose is what you make of it.
Word of the Day #158: Fatherhood
To all the Dads out there, never underestimate your role as a father. You will have so much lasting effect on your children and your children’s children. It may very well be the most important job you ever partake in. But don’t forget to give yourself some grace as well. No one is perfect and your child doesn’t have to see you that way in order to love you. (Posted for Father's Day 2024)
Word of the Day #159: disavow
Another one of those words with a holier-than-thou attitude, more malevolent and pompous than just a rejection. It disowns, showcasing its “you’re dead to me” speech.
Word of the Day #160: technology
It’s a love/hate relationship. Every time there’s a computer glitch or I’m having issues with the internet, I can’t help but think of “The IT crowd” with Roy Trenneman’s voice repeating the phrase, “hello IT, have you tried turning it off and on again?” Then there’s the famous line from “Office Space” of “‘PC load letter,’ what the fuck does that mean?” (In an office that still uses an archaic fax machine, I completely relate). Countless updates to “fix” a problem somehow only create new ones. Problems not even the experts can solve. Some days I relish in its convenience factor. Others make me long for simpler times.
Word of the Day #161: facade
More than just something false. Its ploy is elaborate, intricate, delicate. Held together by a tightly woven mask meant not to blend in, but to stand out in the most marvelous of ways
Word of the Day #162: Moon
Full tonight. Bright with the hot summer sun. Its reflection stretching far and wide, to the darkest of places. And one wonders, is it malevolent, a warning of impending doom? Or perhaps it’s only teasing, hiding a grin behind its cloudy veil.
Word of the Day #163: power
“Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.” -Lord Acton, 1887
Power itself is a tool. And, like many tools, it can be abused and mishandled, wielding terror and tyranny. It shouldn’t be taken for granted, for power is a fickle beast, a high maintenance sovereign that must be assuaged constantly, lest it abandons you for a more adaptable host. And its threat of addiction is ever looming its dark cloud over you, ready and eager to take even the best, most pious, down with it.
