Word of the Day #136-#142
Seven words for seven days (Now coming to you as a daily note and a weekly compilation)
Good morning everyone! Another Monday means another seven words. If you wish to see more word of the day anthologies, pounce on over to my main page where you can find all of that and more! Here are this week's seven words and be sure to catch me on Notes where I share a word daily. Enjoy!
Word of the Day #136: shiny
If you’re a “Firefly” fan (and honestly, you should be), it’s a word that makes its appearance on a daily basis in your life (probably rewatching for the millionth time). It’s vernacular with attitude. A kind of “shoot first ask questions later” mentality. Then, as quickly as it comes, it’s a smile, a tip of the hat, and it’s out the door with a very polite “ma’am.”
Word of the Day #137: Honor
“And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.” -Lee Greenwood (“God Bless the U.S.A.”)
What is honor to me? So much more than words. It’s standing when all you want to do is sit. It’s the friend who gives you the literal shirt off their back. It takes sacrifice (sometimes the ultimate sacrifice). It’s remembering the brave souls that died so we could live. Today (and everyday), that’s what honor is all about.
Word of the Day #138: admirable
Here in the U.S., storm season is upon us. Which means rain, lightning, and sometimes tragedy. This past weekend was no different. But through the tragedy and heartache, an amazing thing has happened.
Within minutes, people rushed to help.
Within hours, donations of money, food, and water hit the streets to those who needed it most.
Within days, thousands of dollars have been raised and countless prayers have been lifted.
Multiple communities coming together not because they align politically, but because there are people who need help. They’ve come, not out of hate, but pure love, and it’s beautiful. A great reminder that even though we may not see it all the time, people do still care about others. I’m humbled and touched. These communities have a long way to go, but there’s hope here, and that’s a pretty great start.
Word of the Day #139: ocean
Closing my eyes, I can hear the sound. The soft shh-ing of the waves is lulling, like a mother’s voice calling her infant to sleep. I rock back and forth on my feet, squishing sand through my toes, my skin soaking up the warmth from the midday sun. The breeze is strong but comforting, carrying the salted air all the way through my nose and into my lungs. As the tide comes ashore the cool water tickles my ankles, lapping, sinking me further on its way back down. Sandpipers do a little dance at the water’s edge. Pacing. Hoping to catch it this time. Gulls spread their wings above me. The call of the ocean is mighty.
Word of the Day #140: different
People say I’m different. Good. I like being different. We all are. It’s one thing that’s so beautiful about the human condition. I say, embrace it. Dare to be different. Show the world who you are.
Word of the Day #141: thunder
A low rumbling resonates,
Ripples of sound exploding by,
Sending percussions through the air,
And nerves on high.
It’s too soon,
Too soon to return.
But Mother Nature doesn’t hear me,
Letting the wild wind churn.
Chaos, beauty, all entwined,
A wretched havoc sung.
Tales told when skies were clear,
Of what Mother Nature had undone.
Word of the Day 142: whopper
When life hands you a full plate and there’s still more pouring off the sides. It’s been a day and the wallops keep coming. Stay strong. Weather it through. It’s a big wave, a monster, but the ship is sturdy and can handle much more than you think.
